Chapter 71 Mankind’s Biggest War Eighth Day

Bhishma arranged his troops in tortoise formation as the eighth day broke.

Dhrishtadyumna heard Yudhishthira say to him, “The adversary is in kurma vyuha there (tortoise formation). You must immediately respond with a configuration that can topple it.”

Dhrishtadyumna started working on his assignment right away. The Pandava army was positioned in a triangular configuration.
Satyaki led one prong, Bhima the other, and Yudhishthira the third, at the crest of the middle division. The science of battle had been expertly perfected by our forebears.

It was passed down orally among the households of the kshatriyas, not in writing. To counter the enemy’s offensive weaponry and tactics of the time, the appropriate employment of armour and tactics was made.

The battle of Kurukshetra took place a long time ago. But the nuclear reaction that it caused to the ground and areas nearby Kurukshetra is still visible. All types of weapons, nucelar arsenals, bombs and missiles were used. Decoding mantras by using arrows, several calamities were caused over the enemy soldiers.

Eight of Dhritarashtra’s sons were slayed by Bhima at the start of the war that day. Before this, Duryodhana’s heart had become fearful. Even as he made the swearing at the assembly ball where the great outrage was performed, Bhimasena appeared to his companions to be making good on his threat to get retribution today.

During this day’s fight, Arjuna experienced a significant loss. Iravan, his beloved son, was slain. This Arjuna by Naga wife’s kid had travelled to Kurukshetra and joined the Pandava armies. The Rakshasa Alambasa, a friend of Duryodhana, was dispatched to battle the Naga warrior. Iravan was killed during a bloody battle.

Arjuna absolutely broke down when he heard this. He turned to Vasudeva and said: “Indeed, Vidura had made it clear to us that both parties would experience unimaginable pain. Why are we causing one another such awful destruction? purely out of concern for property. What joy are we or they likely to find at the end of all this killing? O Madhusudana, I see why the vision is so far away. Yudhishthira stated that he would not engage in combat if Duryodhana agreed to give us five villages while keeping the remaining villages to himself. Due to Duryodhana’s stubborn foolishness, which prevented him from giving up these five villages, both sides had to commit these serious faults. Men would otherwise view me as a coward who could submit tamely to wrong, therefore I only keep fighting for that reason. My heart is overcome with unfathomable agony as I observe the fallen warriors lying on the battlefield. Oh, how vile and terrible we are for continuing in this sad manner.”

When Ghatotkacha saw Iravan dead, he let out a battle yell so loud it shook the entire group of warriors. He then fiercely attacked the Kaurava army with his division. He caused so extensive damage that the Kaurava formation was fractured several times.

When Duryodhana noticed this, he personally led an assault on Bhima’s son. With his elephants, the king of Vanga joined Duryodhana. The eighth day of the war saw Duryodhana fight with the greatest bravery. He eliminated several warriors who were on Ghatotkacha’s side.

A javelin thrown by Ghatotkacha would have killed Duryodhana’s career had the Vanga chief not stepped in quickly with one of his elephants. Duryodhana was saved when the missile struck the beast, which was killed.

Bhishma dispatched a sizable force to help the Kaurava prince under the command of Drona because he was worried about Duryodhana.

Veterans made up a large portion of the troops that attacked Ghatotkacha. The fighting in this area of the conflict was so chaotic and intense that Yudhishthira feared for Ghatotkacha’s safety and despatched Bhimasena to save him. The conflict then become much more violent than previously. On this day, sixteen of Duryodhana’s brothers died.
