Chapter 59 Balarama is Unhappy and Decides to Stay Neutral in War

The Pandavas’ camp was visited by Krishna’s renowned brother Balarama. As the plough carrier, Halayudha, arrived regal like a lion while dressed in blue silk. Krishna, Yudhishthira, and others gladly welcomed the broad-shouldered warrior. The guest bowed to Drupada and Virata before taking a seat next to Dharmaputra.

I arrived in Kurukshetra after discovering that the Bharata descendants had allowed greed, rage, and hatred to overcome them, that the peace negotiations had collapsed, and that war had been launched.

He hesitated briefly, overcome with passion, and then continued: “Dharmaputra, terrible disaster is about to happen. The planet is about to become a gory wasteland covered in dismembered bodies! The kshatriya world has gathered here to face its end because of a dreadful destiny. I have frequently said to Krishna that Duryodhana resembles the Pandavas to us. We may not intervene in their pointless disputes. He refused to take my advice. His intense love for Dhananjaya deceived Krishna, and now he is supporting you in the conflict that he appears to have approved of. How can Krishna and I support different ideologies? I have equal esteem and love for both of my students, Bhima and Duryodhana. Then, how can I oppose one while supporting the other? I too cannot stand to see the Kauravas wiped out. Therefore, I will not participate in this conflict, which will set everything on fire. I have lost all interest in the world as a result of this catastrophe, therefore I will walk around sacred locations.”

After speaking out against the tragic battle in this manner, Krishna’s brother departed the area, his heart heavy with grief and his mind seeking solace in God. This Balarama incident about staying out of the Mahabharata battle serves as an example of the difficult situations that decent and honest individuals frequently encounter.

The dissatisfied person is trapped in a dilemma, forced to choose between two equally valid but opposing courses of action. Only honourable mans find themselves in this situation. Since they are only motivated by their own affections and ambitions, or by their own self-interest, the dishonest people on earth don’t experience these issues.

The great men who have given up all desire disagree. Observe the severe tests that Bhishma, Vidura, Yudhishthira, and Karna through in the Mahabharata.
In that incident, we learn how they overcame their many obstacles. Their responses reflected their diverse individualities rather than following a unified moral model. Each person’s behaviour was a result of how his personality and character responded to the influence of the environment.

Modern critics and expositors occasionally overlook this fundamental underlying aspect and attempt to assess all arguments on the same scales, which is completely incorrect. We may learn from how Dasaratha, Kumbhakarna, Maricha, Bharata, and Lakshmana responded to the challenges they each experienced in the Ramayana.

Balarama’s impartiality throughout the Mahabharata War also offers a lesson. Only two princes stayed neutral throughout that conflict. One was Bhojakata’s king Balarama, while the other was Rukma. The next chapter tells the incident of Rukma, whose younger sister Rukmini wed Krishna.
