Chapter 58 Govinda Informs War is Inevitable, Dupad Proposed to be Commander of the Army

When Govinda arrived in Upaplavya, he informed the Pandavas of what had taken place in Hastinapura.

“I talked, asking people to do what was right and beneficial to them as well. However, it was in vain. There is currently just one option left: war, which is the fourth and last option. The wise assembly elders tried to counsel the ignorant Duryodhana, but he did not heed their words. War preparations must start right away. In Kurukshetra, the Holocaust is imminent.”

Addressing his brothers, Yudhishthira declared that there was no longer any chance for peace and gave the order to gather their troops into battle formation. They divided the army into seven divisions, with the leaders of each division being Drupada, Virata, Dhrishtadyumna, Sikhandin, Satyaki, Chekitana, and Bhimasena. They then debated who ought to be made generalissimo.

Yudhishthira spoke to Sahadeva and said: “One of these seven ought to be chosen as Supreme Commander. He ought to be someone who can defeat the powerful Bhishma, who can burn adversaries to ashes. He should possess the ability to deploy his forces as the situation may occasionally dictate. Who do you believe is most suited to carry out this duty?”

Prior to interviewing elders, it was customary to first obtain the opinions of younger people. The younger people developed excitement and confidence as a result. If the elders were consulted first, no one else would be able to speak freely, and even sincere disagreements may taste of disdain.
Sahadeva said, “Let us accept the king of Virata as our Supreme Commander who supported us when we lived in concealment and with whose assistance we now seek our part of the realm.

Since Drupada is superior in terms of age, intelligence, courage, birth, and strength, it seems appropriate in my opinion to designate him the Generalissimo, remarked Nakula.

“The father of Draupadi, Drupada, has been patiently awaiting a meeting with Drona while learning archery from Bharadwaja. All kings really admire him, and he is helping us as if we were his own sons. He ought to command our army’s assault against Drona and Bhishma.”

Then Dharmaputra sought Dhananjaya’s view. “Dhrishtadyumna ought to lead us on the battlefield, in my opinion. The hero who is in control of his emotions and was created to put an end to Drona. Only Dhrishtadyumna is capable of withstanding Bhishma’s arrows, whose mastery of the bow caused even the legendary Parasurama to shrink back. The only one qualified to serve as our leader is him. No one else comes to mind, “answered Arjuna.

Says Bhimasena “O king, what Arjuna says is accurate, yet the rishis and wise men claim that Sikhandin entered the earth with the intention of assassinating Bhishma. My natural tendency would be to order Sikhandin, whose bright visage resembles that of Parasurama. Nobody else, in my opinion, can beat Bhishma.”

Finally, Yudhishthira requested Kesava’s judgement. The soldiers described are all deserving of selection, according to Krishna. “The terror of them all would grip the Kauravas. Therefore, choose Dhrishtadyumna as your Supreme Commander; I would support Arjuna’s decision overall ”

Dhrishtadyumna, Drupada’s famous son, was appointed Supreme Commander of the Pandava army as a result. He escorted Draupadi to the swayamvara and handed her to Arjuna, who had been brooding for thirteen long years over the humiliation that his sister had to endure in Duryodhana’s presence.
The air was ripped by soldiers’ lion roars, conch and shell blowing, and elephant trumpeting. The Pandava army marched towards Kurukshetra in battle formation amid warlike yells that reverberated across the heavens.
